The salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia (Salar de Uyuni) consist of a solid salt cap whose thickness varies from a few tens of centimetres to several metres. Beneath it is a lake of saturated salt and mineral solutions that varies between 2m and 20m in depth. Leaving aside the factual information, though, it is a place of stunning natural beauty, especially during the summer months when the flats are covered in several inches of water and, when you look out over them, you see everywhere an almost perfect reflection. Round the edges, though, the mountains are often stormy and the frequent changes of light can create some dramatic effects.
