Lions are sociable animals and form prides of up to 30 individuals. Lionesses form the nucleus of the pride but there will be only one dominant male, like this one in the Thornybush Reserve, South Africa. When a younger, stonger male defeats a dominant male and takes over the pride, he will sometimes kill the male cubs of his predecessor.
